Spectroheliograms and Photospheric Magnetograms
نویسنده
چکیده
Amethod for automated coronal hole detection using He I 1083 nm spectroheliograms and photospheric magnetograms is presented here. The unique line formation of the helium line allows for the detection of regions associated with solar coronal holes with minimal line-of-sight obscuration across the observed solar disk. The automated detection algorithm utilizes morphological image analysis, thresholding and smoothing to estimate the location, boundaries, polarity and flux of candidate coronal hole regions. The algorithm utilizes thresholds based on mean values determined from over 10 years of the Kitt Peak Vacuum Telescope daily hand-drawn coronal hole images. A comparison between the automatically created and hand-drawn images for a 11-year period beginning in 1992 is outlined. In addition, the creation of synoptic maps using the daily automated coronal hole images is also discussed.

Local Correlation Tracking and the Magnetic Induction Equation
Recently, local correlation tracking has been applied to magnetograms for determining photospheric velocities. This letter demonstrates that local correlation tracking is inconsistent with the magnetic induction equation which governs the temporal evolution of the photospheric magnetograms. A modified formulation, consistent with the magnetic induction equation, is presented for accurately foll...
متن کاملVertical Lorentz Force and Cross-field Currents in the Photospheric Magnetic Fields of Solar Active Regions
We demonstrate that the vertical Lorentz force and a corresponding lower limit of the cross-field electric current density can be calculated from vector magnetograms of solar active regions obtained at a single height in the solar atmosphere, provided that the vertical gradient of the magnetic field strength is known at this height. We use a predicted vertical magnetic field gradient derived fr...
متن کاملILCTILCT: Recovering Photospheric Velocities from Magnetograms by Combining the Induction Equation with Local Correlation Tracking
We present two methods for deriving the velocity field in magnetized regions of the Sun’s photosphere. As a preliminary step, we introduce a Fourier-based local correlation tracking (LCT) routine that we term “FLCT.” By explicitly employing the observation made by Démoulin & Berger (2003), that results determined by LCT applied to magnetograms involve a combination of all components of the velo...
متن کاملHelicity at Photospheric and Chromospheric Heights
In the solar atmosphere the twist parameter α has the same sign as magnetic helicity. It has been observed using photospheric vector magnetograms that negative/positive helicity is dominant in the northern/southern hemisphere of the Sun. Chromospheric features show dextral/sinistral dominance in the northern/southern hemisphere and sigmoids observed in X-rays also have a dominant sense of rever...
متن کاملCoronal Flux Recycling Times
High-cadence, high-resolution magnetograms have shown that the quiet-Sun photosphere is very dynamic in nature. It is comprised of discrete magnetic fragments which are characterized by four key processes – emergence, coalescence, fragmentation and cancellation. All of this will have consequences for the magnetic field in the corona above. The aim of this study is to gauge the effect of the beh...
